Just over a week after a delivering a controversial speech to 40,000 Boy Scouts in West Virginia, President Trump was back in the Mountain State for another raucous event. This time, instead of ambushing impressionable adolescents with an inappropriate political tirade, he offered-up the hand picked crowd the greatest hits of the campaign.
There was no particular reason for this rally. No new legislation to announce. No new initiative to launch. No accomplishments to celebrate. Many wonder why the President continues to have these campaign style events in the first place, now that we’re closing in on the 200 day mark of the Presidency and, of course, because he’s supposed to be the President of everyone, not just his hard core base.
Yet there he was, at a carefully placed podium, with a carefully selected group of “every-day Americans” behind him, all holding carefully placed signs, and cheering and applauding on cue. There was the usual talk about the wall, about the “fake news” media, and about the swamp in Washington. And then he turned to Russia.
Just hours after the bombshell news broke that special counsel Robert Mueller had convened a grand jury began issuing subpoenas, the President stood before his fawning supporters and did what any honorable, innocent, red blooded American would do. He blamed Hillary Clinton.
“The Russia story is a total fabrication. It’s just an excuse for the greatest loss in the history of American politics, that’s all it is. It just makes them feel better when they have nothing else to talk about. What the prosecutors should be looking at are Hillary Clinton’s 33,000 deleted emails.”
Looking and sounding more like Mussolini than an American President, Trump stood there quiet as the roaring crowd ate it up. They even broke-out into the old “Lock Her Up” chant, much to Trump’s delight.
From the very beginning, President Trump’s delusional strategy has been to deny not only any wrong doing or complicity in Russian’s operation to undermine the 2016 presidential election, but to carry on as if the multiple investigations themselves don’t even exist.
As evidence continues to mount, and leaks and other revelations prove how deep the scandal penetrates Trump’s inner circle, it’s unclear how long the President can continue to live in denial. What is clear, however, is that he intends to find out.
