Christopher Charles Cantwell, one of the leaders of Charlottesville’s white supremacist rally on August 12 that killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injured 19 others, had his first day in court today. It did not go well for him.

The neo-Nazi, who notoriously posted a crying video of himself declaring that he did nothing wrong (below), was denied bail by a Virginia judge in Albemarle General District Court today after turning himself in on two charges of illegal use of tear gas, phosgene and other gases, and one count of malicious bodily injury by means of any caustic substance or agent or use of any explosive or fire.

It may sound like terrorism, but that is a charge reserved for people of different heritage — at least right now.

Cantwell says he will hire an attorney, and when he does, he will have another chance to seek a bond hearing before his case is heard. For now, however, Cantwell will remain in jail where he belongs.
