On Tuesday, after days and days of rumors that the Trump Administration would be rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — or DACA — program, Attorney General Jeff Sessions made it official.
Now, reminding us what a real president sounds like, former President Obama has responded to the move. The program was enacted under his administration.
As Obama wrote in a Facebook post, the move to end DACA is not one that advances the cause of national security by any stretch of the imagination. DACA provides, as its name suggests, protection from deportation for undocumented individuals who arrived in the U.S. as children. These people do not pose any sort of threat to the U.S., and in most cases they work hard to advance themselves and their communities.
Describing Trump’s decision, President Obama wrote:
‘To target these young people is wrong — because they have done nothing wrong. It is self-defeating — because they want to start new businesses, staff our labs, serve in our military, and otherwise contribute to the country we love. And it is cruel. What if our kid’s science teacher, or our friendly neighbor turns out to be a Dreamer? Where are we supposed to send her? To a country she doesn’t know or remember, with a language she may not even speak?’
