The National Rifle Association acknowledged in its magazine that President Barack Obama “really hasn’t had the opportunity” to confiscate firearms. The NRA’s statement goes against the group’s earlier policies, which included general fearmongering and spreading conspiracy theories about Obama dismantling the Second Amendment and coming to take people’s guns.

The NRA walked back on their earlier claim that a president can’t confiscate guns because “Congress writes the laws, not the president.”

These statements appeared in NRA magazine America’s 1st Freedom, which claimed Obama had responded rudely to a question from a gun store owner at a town hall meeting.

Obama said:

I’m about to leave office. There have been more guns sold since I’ve been president than just about any time in U.S. history. There are enough guns for every man, woman and child in this country. And at no point have I ever proposed confiscating guns from responsible gun owners. So it is just not true.

Unfortunately, the NRA continues to claim that Obama wants to confiscate guns, and they’ve now extended that lie to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, saying that her election could lead to law-abiding Americans losing their guns to confiscation.
