On the heels of Trump’s draconian move to ban transgender Americans from serving in the U.S. military following “consultation with [his] Generals and military experts,” Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-MA) responded with scathing remarks on the House floor.
Kennedy, the great-nephew of President John F. Kennedy, chairs the Transgender Equality Task Force in the House. The task force, launched in 2015, became revitalized when the Trump administration began rolling back protections for transgender students.
The transgender ban, reminiscent of the outdated and defunct “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, cited “tremendous medical costs and disruption” of transgender soldiers. Unsurprisingly, the ban made no mention of the $84 million it spends on erectile dysfunction medicines.
While our draft-dodging president has shown only disdain for those who have laid their lives on the line to defend our freedom, we are grateful that up-and-coming stars like Rep. Kennedy are there to honor our service men and women, regardless of gender. Trump may be advocating for an armed forces of the past, but Joe Kennedy is the future.
