Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus has endorsed Donald Trump for president. At first, Marcus backed Jeb Bush, but now he’s throwing his money behind the GOP presumptive nominee. Marcus authored a post for Real Clear Politics in which he expresses his distaste for Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama.
According to the billionaire, the “fate of the nation” depends on electing Donald Trump.
I know Donald Trump, but we’re not close friends. However, I believe he will begin on Day One undoing the damage done by President Barack Obama. I stand ready to help him at every turn.
Like many, I am deeply concerned about the US Supreme Court. When Trump recently released his list of potential appointees, I grew confident in his resolve to keep our court balanced. Even more important: Clinton will push the court leftward for generations. She must be stopped.
Marcus, whose net worth is estimated at $3.8 billion, states, “I genuinely believe that if we to [sic] started The Home Depot today, we would fail because of the hurdles government, especially the current administration, places in front of small business owners.”
And yet, Marcus is prospering under President Obama. Marcus lambastes the passage of the Dodd-Frank reform act, a measure which was designed to improve bank accountability and transparency. He’s afraid Dodd-Frank will be made ‘far worse’ if Clinton is in office. Marcus must believe that holding bad banking behavior accountable is a bad thing. We can only imagine what he thinks of Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
Politicians like Obama and Clinton, aided by the media and academia, have peddled a dangerous sentiment that government can provide for Americans better than the private sector. That’s not just false, it’s likely the nexus of Trump’s massively popular slogan, “Make America Great Again.” We saw it first hand.
Academia is bad. You heard it here first, folks.
While the unemployment rate is at 4.7 percent, Marcus still wrote, “As Americans, the choice is abundantly clear: If you want four more years of President Obama, vote for Hillary Clinton; if you want to take the country in a new direction, vote for Donald Trump.”
Naturally, Marcus doesn’t name any specifics as to how Trump will move us in a ‘new direction’ or even what that direction will be. Trump can’t even explain that to voters. We’re not sure what Marcus’s beef with President Obama is, because like Trump, he failed to mention specifics.
Marcus had something to say to the ‘Never Trump’ movement.
Make no mistake, Republicans who refuse to stand behind their party’s nominee are electing Clinton, whether they cast their ballots for her or not. I have a message for the #NeverTrump crowd: Enough already. Donald Trump is our presumptive nominee and it is time to get over wishing it were not so. If you don’t, change your social media hashtag to #HillaryGOP.
As a GOP donor who stood steadfastly behind Jeb Bush – and who has contributed to candidates for a generation – I urge all Republicans to stand up and be counted in support for Donald Trump.
There’s some good news from Snopes. Marcus is no longer the CEO or chairman of Home Depot. He retired from those positions fourteen years ago.
Home Depot confirmed that in a Facebook comment.
And that’s a good thing. It would be a shame to have to add Home Depot to a boycott list. You know, sort of like how many of us no longer shop at Hobby Lobby anymore.
