Background:

President Trump attended the G7 summit where he created problem after problem for those trying to solve the issue of climate change. Because of his hostility, the G7 countries were unable to come to an agreement.

Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, said that because of his actions, Europe will no longer be able to rely on the United States.

“The times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over, as I have experienced in the past few days,” she said.

“And that is why I can only say that we Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands – of course in friendship with the United States of America, in friendship with Great Britain and as good neighbours wherever that is possible also with other countries, even with Russia.”

What’s happening now:

The Mayors of 92 US cities are defying Trump’s attempts to kill our environment. They’ve united under the banner of the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda, and claim that they intend to carry out the Paris agreement in their own cities, with our without Trump’s blessing.

They wrote:

“The President’s denial of global warming is getting a cold reception from America’s cities.

As 82 Mayors representing 39 million Americans, we will adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement. We will intensify efforts to meet each of our cities’ current climate goals, push for new action to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius target, and work together to create a 21st century clean energy economy.

We will continue to lead. We are increasing investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency. We will buy and create more demand for electric cars and trucks. We will increase our efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, create a clean energy economy, and stand for environmental justice. And if the President wants to break the promises made to our allies enshrined in the historic Paris Agreement, we’ll build and strengthen relationships around the world to protect the planet from devastating climate risks.

The world cannot wait — and neither will we.”

Each Mayor was then signed the statement, making their stance public. Here are some of the notable names:

Mayor Eric Garcetti
City of Los Angeles, CA

Mayor Martin J Walsh
City of Boston, MA

Mayor Bill de Blasio
New York City, NY

Mayor Rahm Emanuel
City of Chicago, IL

Mayor Kasim Reed
City of Atlanta, GA

Mayor Jesse Arreguin
City of Berkeley, CA

Mayor Sly James
Kansas City, MO

Mayor Robert Garcia
City of Long Beach, CA

Mayor Buddy Dyer
City of Orlando, FL

Mayor Ed Lee
City of San Francisco, CA

Mayor Muriel Bowser
City of Washington, D.C.

They then signed off the letter with their mission statement, which reads:

Climate Mayors (aka, Mayors National Climate Action Agenda, or MNCAA) is a network of 92 U.S. mayors — representing over 44 million Americans in red states and blue states — working together to strengthen local efforts for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting efforts for binding federal and global-level policy making. Climate Mayors recently released an open letter to President Trump to oppose his actions thus far against climate action. In January, 30 Climate Mayors issued an EV RFI to show automakers and manufacturers that 114,000 of their cities’ cars and trucks could be electrified.

Trump may pay attention now, if he can look away from admiring his own reflection for about 2 seconds.
